Sculptra is an injectable bio-stimulator containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — a synthetic, biocompatible material that has been used in medicine for decades (in dissolvable sutures, for example). Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which provide immediate volume, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your body to produce its own new collagen. The PLLA microparticles act as a scaffold, triggering a controlled inflammatory response that drives fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis over several months.
The result is a natural, gradual improvement in facial volume, skin thickness, and structural support — rather than the immediate, sometimes obvious change associated with traditional fillers. Sculptra is particularly well-suited to patients who want to restore lost volume in a way that looks completely natural and lasts significantly longer than HA fillers.
Sculptra requires specific injection technique. It must be injected deep (supraperiosteal or deep subcutaneous) and massaged thoroughly after treatment to ensure even distribution. Superficial injection can cause visible nodules. The "5-5-5 rule" (massage for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days) is essential aftercare.
Sculptra nodules (small, firm lumps under the skin) are a known complication, particularly if the product is injected too superficially or not massaged adequately. They can be persistent and difficult to treat. Sculptra should not be injected into the lips or periorbital area. It requires a practitioner with specific training in PLLA injection technique.

Sculptra requires specific injection technique and thorough patient education about aftercare. Ensure your practitioner has specific training in PLLA injection and can demonstrate experience with Sculptra. Ask about their protocol for managing nodules if they occur.
