What are Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters are injectable hyaluronic acid treatments designed to deeply hydrate the skin from within. Unlike dermal fillers, which are designed to add volume and structure, skin boosters use a very soft, fluid form of hyaluronic acid that spreads through the dermis to improve hydration, elasticity, and overall skin quality.

The most well-known skin booster brands include Restylane Skinboosters (Vital and Vital Light), Juvederm Volite, and Teosyal Redensity. Each has slightly different formulations, but all work on the same principle of delivering hydrating HA into the mid-dermis.

Clinical note

Skin boosters are often confused with Profhilo, but they are different products. Profhilo is a bio-remodelling agent that stimulates collagen and elastin production. Skin boosters primarily provide hydration and a subtle improvement in skin quality. Both can be used together for a comprehensive skin quality treatment programme.

What can be treated?

  • Face: Improving skin hydration, radiance, and fine lines.
  • Neck and décolletage: Hydrating and improving crepey skin.
  • Hands: Restoring hydration to dry, ageing hands.
  • Lips: Subtle hydration and volume enhancement.
  • Under-eyes: Improving the appearance of fine lines and dark circles caused by dehydration.

What to expect — the process

  • The protocol: An initial course of 3 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart is typically recommended, followed by maintenance sessions every 4–6 months.
  • The treatment: Multiple small injections are placed across the treatment area using a fine needle or cannula. A full face treatment takes 20–30 minutes. Small bumps (papules) may be visible immediately after but typically resolve within a few hours.
  • Results: Skin feels immediately more hydrated. Full results develop over 2–4 weeks as the HA integrates into the tissue.
Important safety information

As with all HA injectables, there is a small risk of vascular occlusion. Ensure your practitioner carries hyaluronidase and knows how to manage vascular complications. Avoid treatment if you have active skin infections, inflammation, or a known allergy to hyaluronic acid.

How to choose a clinic

Skin boosters are prescription-only medicines and should be administered by a qualified prescriber. Ensure your practitioner has specific training in the product they are using and understands the anatomy of the treatment area. Ask about their protocol for managing vascular complications.
