Fat dissolving injections use deoxycholic acid — a naturally occurring bile acid that the body uses to break down dietary fat — to permanently destroy localised fat cells when injected directly into fatty tissue. The most well-known brand is Aqualyx, though other products including Kybella (approved in the US) and various compounded solutions are also used.
Once injected, deoxycholic acid disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cells to rupture and release their contents. The body then processes and eliminates the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system over the following weeks. Because fat cells are permanently destroyed, results are long-lasting provided weight is maintained.
Fat dissolving injections are not a weight loss treatment. They are designed for small, localised pockets of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. They are not suitable for patients with significant weight to lose. The ideal candidate has good skin elasticity and a specific, defined area of concern.
Fat dissolving injections carry a risk of nerve damage if injected near the marginal mandibular nerve (in the chin area). This can cause temporary weakness of the lower lip. Skin necrosis is a rare but serious complication. Only use a practitioner with specific training in this treatment who understands the relevant anatomy.
